We congratulate Patrick Süß on receiving the Else Kröner Memorial Fellowship for his research on the connection between intestinal inflammation and Parkinson’s disease.

Recent studies suggest that inflammation in the gut can contribute to the development of Parkinson’s by spreading to the brain. In mouse models, chronic intestinal inflammation triggers an inflammatory response in microglial cells and leads to a loss of dopamine-producing neurons in the midbrain.

The goal of Patrick Süß’s project is to decipher the molecular signatures of these immune cells in the midbrain of mice and patients with chronic inflammatory bowel diseases. His research aims to explore whether targeting microglial cells could reduce Parkinson’s-like changes associated with chronic intestinal inflammation.
